The Jekyll Island Museum is your Gateway to the Gilded Era. When winter rolled in, many wealthy northerners migrated south. Founded in 1885 on Jekyll Island off the Atlantic Ocean coast of Georgia, Jekyll Island Club’s members included the likes of J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, William H. Vanderbilt and others. It gained a reputation as “the richest, most inaccessible club in the world.” Jekyll Island Club’s primary purpose was as a hunting, fishing and recreational retreat that also encouraged women to participate in such pursuits. A golf course, marina, swimming pool and tennis courts were all later added. Several club members built so-called cottages on the island. While they were simple in comparison to their permanent estates, the residences offered more expansive and private accommodations. Tours of the 240-acre Jekyll Island Club National Historic District include some of the extravagant homes among the 33 structures on-site. Groups can also stop by Jekyll Island Museum. Admission is free, and it offers a variety of daily programs and interpretive exhibits centered around the Gilded Age era. goldenisles/listing/jekyll-island-museum grouptourmagazine/article/117014-Gilded-Age-mansions-of-the-South-are-an-eye-popping-group-travel.html#.VL1idPldWSo
