The Jill Pointer Breast Cancer Game Plan This past Thursday we - TopicsExpress

The Jill Pointer Breast Cancer Game Plan This past Thursday we got the preliminary report that Jill has breast cancer. She is the third of the Picirilli sisters to get this diagnosis, so it was not a surprise…although we would obviously wish it were not true. The cancer is: Low grade, slower dividing lobular (think spider-web) that is the second most common of the breast cancer types. It likes to hide, and is fairly hard to detect. What we know: Having new eyes on Jill seems to have made the difference in finding this. As new doctors to Jill’s case history, they were very cautious and ordered for the first time, a breast MRI. It was this MRI that picked up on the cancer, whereas traditional mammograms and ultrasounds did not. As a matter of fact, even knowing where it was from the MRI, it was still hard to find. It does not seem to be aggressive, and this will allow for an evaluation of the cancer cells after surgery to determine if Jill needs chemo, which right now is unlikely. Lymph nodes are also not a great concern at this time. When pressed, the surgeon said it was probably at stage 1. We are early on this, and that is a blessing. What we are going to do: Schedule surgery, most likely for May 28, since the surgeon operates on Wednesdays. It will be a double mastectomy, and that seems to the best way of taking care of this once and for all. We have a meeting tomorrow with a plastic surgeon, and that will determine when the surgery will occur. This will give her all of the month of June to recover, and be ready for her vital duties at Truth and Peace. We are also scheduling genetic testing, not only for Jill, but for our girls if Jill comes back positive as well. Your outpouring of prayer on Monday was such a blessing for us. That situation is still not totally resolved, but we are feeling much better about it right now. We desire your prayers for this next chapter for us as well. We will keep you posted on how we are all doing. Thanks, Allen for the entire Pointer Family.
