The Joan Baez concert this evening may have been the best concert I have ever attended. Her voice is not what it used to be, but she actually looks better at 73 than at 33! And she seems much younger now too. But one couldnt be in that audience and not feel a little regret...or at least I couldnt. Thinking back to all the grand hopes and dreams of that generation that grew-up during the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War, and to now see how little we have changed the world. Our two presidents from that generation--Clinton and Bush--clearly learned nothing from that time. One squandered our best chance ever to work more closely with a new Russia that had cast off the trappings of totalitarianism and had not yet embraced its new authoritarianism, while the other led us into a war even more immoral and unwinnable than Vietnam. But tonight, listening to Baez, it is hard--despite all the evidence--not to be optimistic about the future.
