The Joker first appeared in Batman #1 in 1940 as a villainous psychopath with a warped, sadistic sense of humor. He was originally planned to be killed off during that very issue, but was spared after intervention by the editors at DC Comics at the time. Eventually, the Joker endured as one of the greatest villains ever created in comic-dom, and ultimately rose to become the archenemy of the Batman, considered by critics to be his perfect adversary. The Joker broke into popular consciousness in the 2008 movie The Dark Knight, in which Heath Ledger portrayed the character as a psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy. To prepare for the role, Ledger lived alone in a hotel room for a month, formulating the characters posture, voice, and personality, and kept a diary, in which he recorded the Jokers thoughts and feelings. Ledgers conclusion of how the Joker should be portrayed so convinced director Christopher Nolan, that he actually let Ledger shoot and direct the videos the Joker sends out as warnings to the citizens of Gotham as part of the script in the film. On January 22, 2008, after he had completed filming The Dark Knight, Ledger died of an accidental prescription drug overdose, leading to intense press attention and memorial tributes. Ledgers portrayal of the Joker was highly acclaimed. On February 22, 2009, Ledger posthumously won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance, becoming the first ever actor to win an academy award for the portrayal of a comic strip/comic book/graphic novel character.
