The June 27 lava flow could begin following a new path as breakouts upslope of the stalled front advance to the north. Darryl Oliveira, Hawaii County Civil Defense administrator, said the most active breakout was located about 1.5 miles from Pahoa Marketplace as of Monday morning. It had advanced about 200 yards to the north in 24 hours. Oliveira and the chief Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist said it remains to be seen if it will continue heading in that direction, which would take it away from the shopping center, or turn more to the northeast as the flow’s other branches have done. It’s also unclear at this point whether it will become the new flow front, though officials say they are watching it closely.
