The Kaiser Family Foundation has a new study out on the savings from the MLR requirement in health care reform. Last year health insurance companies rebated $1.2 billion to ratepayers because the companies did not meet the MLR requirement. The new study finds that rates were $900 million lower becuase of the MLR requirement. So the total savings was $2.1 billion. The MLR requirement is the law that requires health insurance companies to spend at least 80% of the money they collect in premiums on actual health care.
