The Kanawha Forest Coalition was formed only nine months ago. As 2014 comes to a close weve been thinking about all weve accomplished together these past 9 months, and we want to ask for your help in making 2015 the year we stop the KD#2 mine. See below for a list of some of our recent accomplishments and Please make an investment in the future of the Kanawha Valley, of Kanawha State Forest, of our health, and the health and well-being of our children who will inherit this land. We intend to stop the KD#2 mine. We need your help. Go to Kanawhaforestcoalition.org and click donate on the menu bar. You can a make a secure donation online or by check. Your donation can be tax deductible (look for the tax deductible link on the donate page). If we all give what we can, whether its $5 or $5,000, well have the resources we need to be successful. We sincerely thank you! (And special thanks to Adam Cox for writing the song that accompanies this video!) Since April: -Weve assembled a strong coalition made up of passionate, skilled, and knowledgeable West Virginians and local organizations -Weve hosted nine incredible community meetings, from Loudendale, to Kanawha City, downtown Charleston, and Mt. Alpha -We appealed the KD#2 mine to the WV Surface Mine Board, exposing the many ways this permit was issued improperly -Weve engaged our community through social media, growing our facebook page to over 2,300 followers and our email alert list to nearly 4,000 people -We collected over 5,000 signatures in opposition to the KD#2 mine, petitioning Governor Tomblin to direct the DEP the rescind the permit -Weve successfully and consistently kept this issue in the media, with many dozens of newspaper articles, TV news stories, letters to the editor, and Op-Eds -Weve organized rallies at the WV State Capitol and at the DEP headquarters -We designed and distributed hundreds of yard signs which can now be seen in neighborhoods throughout the Kanawha Valley -Weve had meetings with legislators, the Governors office, City Council, and the DEP -And most importantly, weve held the DEP and the coal companys feet to the fire, refusing to let them get away with ignoring their own laws and ignoring the adverse impacts of MTR on WV communities
