The Kentucky Derby was born out of a traditional form of American - TopicsExpress

The Kentucky Derby was born out of a traditional form of American entertainment over 200 years ago. Young men would gather with their best horses, often Plantation Horses (now known as Tennessee Walking Horses) for a day of racing and festivities. It was a community-wide social affair and often included music, dancing, cockfights and boxing matches, and of course, food! Gambling was common and bets were placed on everything. These events eventually grew into the prestigious horseracing sport it is today, complete with horses bred specifically for speed, known as the Kentucky Thoroughbred. Come visit us at Historic Tunnel Mill to learn more about life in early America.
