The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) Job Vacancies The Commission is inviting applications for the following positions:- Senior Human Rights Officer: WAJIR - Open Ref: KNCHR/ADM/SHRO/7/14 Reports to: Commission Secretary Location: Wajir, with occasional travel Duration: Permanent and Pensionable Gross Salary: Kshs 205,850 Key duties and responsibilities: Provide leadership in and guide the conceptualization, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the work of the Northern Kenya Regional Office Coordinate implementation and management of the complaints handling process, investigations and other key areas of work as stipulated under Section 8 of the KNCHR Act, 2011 and as may relevant to the Northern Kenya Region Prepare and present quality and timely monthly, quarterly and annual reports of the work of the Regional office, including reports of financial expenditure by the Regional Office Manage and supervise all staff of the Regional Office, including management of financial resources and fixed assets Ensure compliance with the policies of the Commission in the running of the Regional Office Ensure proper flow of information and communication between the Head Office and the Regional Office, as well as with other Regional Offices. Build and maintain sustainable partnerships with both state and non state actors in the region on behalf of the Commission Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time. Qualifications and Experience A Masters degree in a Social Science from a recognized institution with five years experience in a busy programme-related environment Or A Bachelors Degree in a Social Science from a recognized institution with seven years experience in busy programme-related environment. In addition the suitable candidates for the above position should possess the following skills and attributes:- Good understanding of human rights. Good organizational, writing, interpersonal, communication, people management, analytical and presentation skills. Must be willing to travel the vast terrain covered by the region hence flexible and adaptable. High degree of integrity Excellent computer skills in various computer packages. Ability and readiness to work under pressure and work for long/odd hours. Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, service providers and suppliers and other stakeholders. Human Rights Officer II (4 POSITIONS): - Open WAJIR-Ref: KNCHR/ADM/HRO II/8/14 KITALE- Ref: KNCHR/ADM/HRO II/9/14 MOMBASA-Ref: KNCHR/ADM/HRO II/10/14 KISUMU- Ref: KNCHR/ADM/HRO II/11/14 Reports to: Senior Human Rights Officer Location: Wajir, Kisumu, Kitale or Mombasa with occasional travel Duration: Permanent and Pensionable Gross Salary; Kshs 100,250 Job Objective To manage and process complaints from petitioners. Description of key duties The main tasks performed by the job holder. Implementing systems and processes for efficient processing and management of complaints on human rights violations in the Region Screening of petitioners Assist in reviewing of Weekly screenings Coordinating and supporting the Complaints referral and management committee Undertaking research and drafting legal opinions on human rights complaints Assisting in the promotion of proactive resolution of complaints on human rights violations. Assist in preparation of various programme reports Minimum Requirements A Bachelors Degree in Law and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya At least one year work experience in an equivalent level or human rights Investigations Skills on Alternative Dispute Resolution Good skills on Complaints handling and investigations with a good understanding of human rights Good Interviewing, Investigation and report writing skills Good organizational, writing, interpersonal(people management), communication and analytical skills Sound Knowledge and understanding of International Human Rights instruments and the Constitution. A good team player who is results oriented, has attention to detail and is client focused Computer literacy, ability to work in stressful and demanding environments. Fluency in spoken and written English and Swahili. HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICER I/PERSONAL ASSISTANT TO THE CHAIRPERSON - Open Ref: KNCHR/ADM/HRO I/PA/12/14 Reports to: The Chairperson Location: Nairobi with occasional travel Duration: Permanent and Pensionable Gross Salary: Kshs 141, 950 Job Objective To provide technical/programmatic and administrative support to the Chairpersons office. Description of key duties The main tasks performed by the job holder. To provide comprehensive, confidential and high quality technical and administrative service to the Chairperson; Assisting the chairperson in their day to day programmatic and engaging in research into various human rights concerns and/or emerging issue of local, regional and international concern related to the chairpersons’ work as well as drafting and advice on redress options; Preparing speaking notes, legal briefs, opinions and insights for the chairpersons’ engagements; Preparation of concept papers, intervention strategies and proposal writing for various activities; Coordinating and facilitating meeting mundane to the Chairpersons work; Assist in providing analytical advice on and implementation of appropriate redress mechanisms; To manage and prioritize all communications to the chairs office at all times and ensure adherence to deadlines in response; Any other duty as may be assigned from time to time. Minimum Requirements A Bachelors Degree in Law and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya At least three years work experience in an equivalent and similar level and position Good skills on Complaints handling and investigations with a good understanding of human rights Good Interviewing and report writing skills Good organizational, writing, interpersonal(people management), communication and analytical skills Sound Knowledge and understanding of local and International Human Rights instruments and the Constitution. A good team player who is results oriented, has attention to detail and is client focused Computer literacy, ability to work in stressful and demanding environments.
