The Kenya champions lost 5-0 to Esperance of Tunisia in their return leg of the lucrative competition in a match played at Rades Stadium on Monday Gor Mahia were humiliated 5-0 by Esperance in the return leg of Caf Champions League match played at Rades Stadium on Monday. This means that the Kenyan club bows out 8-2 on goal aggregate after they had gone down 3-2 in Nairobi one week ago and it ends their Champions League sojourn in a rather embarrassing way. Going into the return match, Gor Mahia needed to win by three goals to be sure of going through to the second round. However, the absence of top goalkeeper Jerim Onyango, who picked an injury before the return match was always going to be a big problem. The new man, who took over from Onyango, David Juma lacked in experience and he conceded five goals for it. After holding their opponents to a barren draw in the first 43 minutes of the match, Gor Mahia crumbled thereafter with Haithem Jouni opening the scores in the 44th minute after he beat Juma with a long shot. The homeside went to the break with a 1-0 advantage and they came back in the second period eager to finish off the game and Jouni was on the mark again just three minutes after the restart this time he simply placed the ball beyond Juma in goal. The lethal striker was not done yet and he scored his third of the match in the 56th minute in a move that completely demoralized Gor Mahia. But Esperance were not done yet and two minutes later Ghanian international Harrison Afful had his name on the scorer’s sheet before paving the way for Idriss Mhirisi to finish the rout. Gor Mahia’s front men Dan Sserunkuma and George Odhiambo were caged by the Esperance defenders and there were never really in the match. The Kenyan champions are expected home on Wednesday and will now have to focus on defending the league.
