The Knights of the Road The Year was 1930, it was the worst of times for so many, Jobs were almost none existence, It was not like today, no unemployment, and each town had a limit, you could have one meal a day then move on. Some cites had soup kitchens, these mostly for children and family’s with children. The unmarried men were expected to just keep moving, So the hobos came to be, They became many, yes a army of them, Junkles could be found at the ege of every town. They were not bad people, just down on there luck, Still not having eats, or clothes to keep them warm, most would steal if they got the chance, it was considered Surinam. This story is based in fiction, We are using Three men we base the story on Jack a book keeper in his early fifty’s a man of slim build and not very healthy. Hank a Taylor who has a lung infection, still he struggles on, he is younger than Jack but he is in his forty’s Then there is Tom, a strapping young man in his early twenty’s In many ways it was a strange trio, Jack and Hank, Stayed by Tom, as if they knew he would help them. And soon it became clear Tom would and did help, When he some times found a days work, he shared what he was paid, And when they had nothing, he was the one that would go find some food. No one ask him were he got it, they just were pleased to have food, In the late summer when the gardens were ready, ( almost every home had one) Tom would long after midnight visit the gardens and gater things for to put in the one pot they had to cook in Potatoes was his choice, he could did them and leave the plant, Carrots, turnips were on his list, most night he would gather a sack, taking a few from several gardens. As summer ends , life gets harder for all three, Hank is far from well, and the cold and wet are playing a toll on him, Tom dose his best to find work, He gets a few days helping a farmer cut wood, it pays little, though the farmer gives him some bones as he had just butchered a steer, also he gave him a meal each day and twenty five cents, This did by some beans and some tea, not a lot but it did help them survive, Tom decided to move on, So they managed to crawl into an empty stock car, It was a cold and windy place, they dare not light a fire, and their clothes were but rags, they lined their boots with newspaper and Tom put news papper around Hanks chest and back, then pulled an old dirty shirt over them, At the edge of Winnipeg, one of the coldest parts of the country, the railroad cops Threw them out of the stock car, In doing so they hurt Jacks leg, so he had to crawl to move, Tom found a deserted building an old shed of some kind, he carried Jack there than helped Hank. They had nothing to eat and it was so cold,Tom left the others and drifted towards the down town area, He was searching for some one thing or place that would help his friends, It was hopeless, he did find a soup kitchen but it was now closed,It was then Tom decided he had to do what he had decided he would never do, Looking a round he chose a restaurant that was closed, he rapped on the window but know one appeared, Then he wondered down the street till he found an ally, that led him to the real entrance of the restaurant, with hus knife he in a few minutes managed to jimmy the lock, Soon he filled his sack, and going threw back alleys he headed back to Jack and Hank, On his way he found a sheltered spot under a small bridge, the creek that flowed threw it was now dry, so they had some shelter and could make a fire, He Hid his sack then went and carried Jack to this spot, going art way back to help Hank, For the next sx weeks Tom kept them alive by stealing, He did not like what he had to do but it was all he could do. Christmas morning came and Hank did not awake, as Tom checked he was stone Cold, They moved but could do nothing with Hanks body, The second week in January, Jack did not wake, though for a time he was a live but in a coma, Tom found a policeman and tried to get help for Jack, but though a doctor looked at Jack there was nothing could be done, He died that day. Tom was free, But he did not feel free, Then e did what some may think stupid, He went to the police station, were he told of the places he had stole from, But the strangest thing was they would not accept this, He was told, he was just trying to get board for the winter, Tom was Beaten He wanted to pay for what he did, but How iff Even confessing was not believed, It posable Tom would have taken his life, Except for a stranger, who was looking for men to work at logging in the north, Why he picked Tom, Tom never knew, he was given a meal, and some heavy work clothes, then along with about twenty other men, they were on the way to the forest in northern Mandatory, We will End this Part Here Maybe an other time we Tell of his time in the woods Bill©10/8/2013
