The Kokomo Police Department wants you to be safe for the holiday season. Here are some ways to stay safe: Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave your house or apartment, even for a few minutes. Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts when outdoors. Back doors and windows are a favorite target for burglars. Please call your local law enforcement agency if you see someone that is acting suspiciously. Don’t openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in the front window. They could be seen by a burglar. Use a light timer when you are away and ask a trusted friend or relative to pick up your newspapers and mail. If you go out for the evening, turn on the lights and a radio or television so the house or apartment appears to be occupied. Always lock your vehicle and when you return to your vehicle scan the interior of your car to be sure no one is hiding inside. Check to see if you are being followed and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Be extra careful with purses and wallets, lock packages in the trunk, and keep vehicle doors locked. Be wary of fake gift card offers, charity scams, holiday online job offers, and giving out personal information over the telephone and the computer.
