The Korean War: the Korean War is often referred to as the forgotten war, potentially because it was only 5 years after the Second World War. The British contributed 100,000 soldiers, sailors and airmen to the fight alongside their Canadian and US allies, as well as other UN members. After Japanese troops left North Korea, the Soviet Union quickly stepped in to create a communist dictatorship, and placed Kim il sung in charge. The United States was confident that Chinese intervention was unlikely, but they were wrong. 180,000 Chinese troops joined the fight alongside the communist north. A famous, yet sad battle of the war was the battle for imjing river. It pitted the 600 men of the glorious Gloucester regiment against 30,000 Chinese troops. Although 10,000 Chinese were killed, the entire glorious Gloucester regiment was wiped out. In 1953, soviet leader Joseph Stalin died, shaking the foundations of the communist regime, thus ending the war mid 1953. They call it the forgotten war, but in my mind, and hopefully your minds, it will never be forgotten. (Mitch)
