The LNP under Howard had a working and effective Nauru based Asylum Seeker/Boat policy which was dismantled by the ALP when they got into power under Rudd. It was for the ALP to prove they had a better plan when in fact it is all too late for them. I would encourage implementing strategies and elements of the former LNP policy. As for the PNG plan, I agree with the Opposition as they agree with the people on the ground in PNG. We have seen PNG residents island hop down to the Australian mainland to seek services, so clearly there is a demand or shortage for health and other services for most PNG people and that issue with only grow and become worse in time with the re-settlement of asylum seekers (many of whom are financial refugees) accessing nearly exhausted services and then being forced to island hop to Australia. Mr Rudd knows this and his policy is setting both Australia and in particular the Torres Strait and also PNG up to fail on this matter.
