The LP, the cassette tape, the CD. Soon they might be all gone - as far as buying them from a shop. After the quakes we lost a couple of good record shops - Radar up Cashel Mall and Real Groovy down in Tuam Street. We still had the CD Shop (rebranded Marbecks a few years ago) in several shopping malls. Now Marbecks are about to close their last store in Christchurch (Westfield Riccarton), and we are left with three Penny Lane outfits and the various Big Red Sheds. JB Hifi have decided not to come to Christchurch in the short term - there were rumours a couple of years ago that they were going to go into the old Borders store at Westfield, but that is Farmers kids now. With the earthquakes happening at the same time as MP3 downloads were taking off, maybe we will not see any new (or reopening) CD shops in the city.
