The Last Roundup? Dear Organic Consumer, Last May, the EPA - TopicsExpress

The Last Roundup? Dear Organic Consumer, Last May, the EPA voted for Monsanto—and against public health when it approved higher limits for the amount of glyphosate (the key active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup) residue allowed on your fruits, grains and vegetables. Like you, I was incensed that the EPA would ignore the overwhelming evidence that Roundup, the most widely-used herbicide in the world, is just as dangerous as DDT. Municipalities spray Roundup on roadsides and parks. Homeowners, golf courses and landscapers use it to control weeds. But the number one use for Monsanto’s Roundup is GMO crops. We need your help to get GMO crops and foods labeled—and banned! So far, we’ve raised almost $130,000 toward our $200,000 fundraising goal. Can you help us raise another $70,000 by midnight, March 31? Click here for instructions on how to donate online, or by phone or email. Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, may be the most biologically disruptive chemical in the environment, according to an April 2013 study published in the journal Entropy. The study links glyphosate to debilitating diseases like gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, autism, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, and says that the chemical’s negative impact on the human body is “insidious and manifests slowly over time, as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout the body.” Beyond Pesticides’ extensive documentation of past research links glyphosate to increased cancer risk, neurotoxicity and birth defects, as well as eye, skin and respiratory irritation, lung congestion, increased breathing rate, and damage to the pancreas, kidney and testes. A 2012 study published in the journal Archives of Toxicology showed Roundup is toxic to human DNA even when diluted to concentrations 450-fold lower than used in agricultural applications. And just recently, a U.S. Geological Survey study found Monsanto’s Roundup in 75 percent of air and rain samples tested in Mississippi. You would think that all these studies, all this research, would give our regulators in Washington D.C. pause. Instead, they’re approving one new Roundup-Ready crop after another. And telling America’s farmers, “Go ahead, use more.” Roundup is the most widely used herbicide on the planet. That won’t change until we—consumers, organic farmers, moms and responsible citizens—force GMO’s off the market. We can do that by passing laws that ban GMO crops, boycotting GMO-tainted foods and pressing forward until we get mandatory GMO labeling laws, But we can’t do this without your help.
