The Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King Sunday School - 10:00 a.m. Holy Communion - 11:00 a.m. The Collect Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in thy well beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The First Lesson A reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah. Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD. Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD. And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the LORD. Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. The Word of the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:1-6) ________________________________________ Psalm 46 Deus noster refugium. 1 GOD is our hope and strength, * a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be moved, * and though the hills be carried into the midst of the sea; 3 Though the waters thereof rage and swell, * and though the mountains shake at the tempest of the same. 4 There is a river, the streams whereof make glad the city of God; * the holy place of the tabernacle of the Most Highest. 5 God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed; * God shall help her, and that right early. 6 The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are moved; * but God hath showed his voice, and the earth shall melt away. 7 The LORD of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our refuge. 8 O come hither, and behold the works of the LORD, * what destruction he hath brought upon the earth. 9 He maketh wars to cease in all the world; * he breaketh the bow, and knappeth the spear in sunder, and burneth the chariots in the fire. 10 Be still then, and know that I am God: * I will be exalted among the nations, and I will be exalted in the earth. 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our refuge. ________________________________________ The Second Lesson A reading from the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Colossians. Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. The Word of the Lord. (Colossians 1:11-20) ________________________________________ The Holy Gospel The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke. When they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified [Jesus], and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. The Gospel of the Lord. (Luke 23:33-43) ________________________________________ Revised Common Lectionary, Year C.
