The Lazy Actor’s Movie Review, Vol. 4: “The Lone - TopicsExpress

The Lazy Actor’s Movie Review, Vol. 4: “The Lone Ranger” Hollywood has been far more un-PC than this in the past, and will be again in the future, I promise you. No, Johnny Depp is not an actual Native American. But he was officially adopted by the Comanche tribe, and if that’s good enough for the tribe, it should be good enough for all of us morally righteous white people, too. And besides, the only characters who are given an heroic portrayal in this film (besides, of course, the two leads) are the Native Americans themselves. All the other whiteys are weak, ignorant, evil, or end up dead in the first 40 minutes, anyway. Attaching all of this huff-and-puff moral outrage lends the movie much more weight than it actually earns. Speaking of which, the movie itself? It’s OK. Cute, mindless fun. Yeah, one of the bad guys is considerably darker in nature than your average Disney villain, but (again, take a breath, people) so were all of the villains in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, too, which, of course, were made by the same director. (And that sure didn’t stop a whole bunch of families from seeing those films with their kids, as I recall.) If you want a family-friendly movie for small kids, this ain’t it. But if you’re looking for a silly, mindless bit of shoot-em-up/blow-em-up fun, throw down the bucks and go see it.
