The Leard Forest Alliance is proud to invite you to an important event honouring two Australians who stand out as examples of courage, endurance and generosity - two people who have stood firm against the controversial destruction of the Leard State Forest for the largest coal mine currently under construction in Australia. Those men are Bill Ryan, a ninety-two year old Kokoda war veteran who has been arrested taking direct action to stop Whitehaven Coal at Maules Creek, and Cliff Wallace, the local farmer hosting the popular community camp at Maules Creek. Places are limited for this free evening of celebration and discussion, so please RSVP. eventbrite.au/e/heroes-and-visionaries-tickets-12249780423?aff=eac2 We are told this is the new Australia. An Australia that is “open for business,” and more particularly “in the coal business”. But is this the Australia we want it to be? We don’t think so. We believe it is time to reflect and imagine a new Australia. Joining these heroes will be Senator Lee Rhiannon, Wiradjuri woman and CEO of the Australian Indigenous Governance Institute, journalist and activist Wendy Bacon and former WA Premier, Dr Carmen Lawrence, who will be discussing the question: What kind of Australia could we be, what kind of values do we need to honour in ourselves and our community to create that new Australia and how do we create the new? Bill and Cliff will also be sharing the night with many of the over 240 brave souls arrested taking peaceful, direct action to stop Whitehavens coal mine at Maules Creek. We hope you can join us to celebrate some heroes of our time and imagine an Australia with more of them.
