The Lenten Journey – Seeing Is Believing SEEING IS BELIEVING John 9:13-34 One of the things about human beings is that we are visual. It is normal that we have a propensity to believe the things that we can physically see. What made the miracles in the bible so admired was not because of the lessons behind the miracles but it was the perceptions that change before their very eyes of those who witnessed such acts. But this is not so true for Christian believers, for we have been taught to walk by faith and not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7) In this devotion we will gain a deeper understanding of how SEEING IS BELIEVING. We have a controversial story of Jesus healing a blind man on the Sabbath. What makes this such a debate is not because He healed on the Sabbath but because they have failed to see who Jesus really is. There are three reasons that contribute to the understanding of why Seeing is Believing who Jesus is. The first is not relying on our Hindsight. These Pharisees had mentioned that they were disciples of Moses. By doing so they were more concerned with the laws of the past than with an immediate need of the present. This blind man was given his sight by obeying Jesus not by obeying the law. Many of the problems among believers today are because they hang on to past laws, rituals and beliefs instead of the Word of the Lord. Jesus explained this in Matthew 5:17, he said “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law of the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.) We as believers can see clearer and have a greater understanding if we did not rely on our hindsight. Next seeing is believing if we have the right insight. These Jews repeatedly asked this man to explain how this miracle took place. It is impossible to explain how the works of Jesus moves us from a place of blindness to sight. It is not our place to give explanation of our outward results, because the insight that He does give us speaks for its self. He stated that all I know and all that I need to know is I once was blind but now I see. That’s what makes this Christian journey so exciting – that we cannot take any of the credit for God’s grace but we are a living witness. Finally seeing is believing because of our foresight. When we look at the things that Jesus has done for us we are more and more convinced of His goodness and glory. Pastor Settle W.
