The Liberal Party of Canada supports free trade; by creating open markets for Canadian goods and services, there is room for export-oriented businesses to grow, which in turn creates jobs, provides choice, and lowers prices for Canadian consumers. The emphasis for negotiating any trade agreement should be on producing growth that will deliver a real and fair chance for middle class families. Our party shares your concern about the Conservative government’s lack of transparency regarding the Canada-China FIPA. By hiding the terms of this agreement, the Conservative government is willfully ignoring valuable input on how this deal can be better serve Canadian interests. We have repeatedly asked the government to hold public discussions and debate on this agreement in a manner that ensures that Canadians are informed, and we have voiced our own concerns that this has not happened. The fact that Mr. Harper opted to ratify this agreement without consulting with Canadians or their colleagues in Parliament is deeply disturbing to us. Liberals strongly believe in protecting Canadian investments and deepening our economic relationship with China, and there is much more to be done to strengthen our relationship with that country. However we must be do so in a manner that is open and transparent, and that ensures Canadians are informed and included. It is through dialogue with Canadians like you that the Liberal Party of Canada can continue to ensure that the policies we create and support are representative of the values and needs of Canadians.
