The Little Shrine Club called Quint in Lyons,GA has picked up another child that will benefit from the expert medical care of Shriners Hospitals for Children, Greenville S.C. Station, but this one is like no other and will break your heart or cause a little flaring of the temper. We were informed of a young boy who walked on his toes, so after a little searching we were able to locate this young man and his guardian who lives in a motorhome (Just the two of them). As we began to talk with the guardian, we were informed that he was autistic and had some permanent damage to the left side of his brain. It was revealed that when he was an infant he received blunt force trauma to his head by his daddy hitting him. He is also a victim of shaken baby syndrome. The daddy is serving time for this and biological mother is nowhere to be found. When we began to explain that we were there from Alee Shriners/Quint Shrine Club and wanted to see if we could help this young man with his walking difficulty, the guardian said they could not afford it and do not have any way to travel to go back and to for him to get help. They informed us that he had been seeing another doctor sometime back and when they could not afford the co-pay any more, they had to stop getting him help. We explained that it did not matter if they had the ability to pay or not with Shriners, he would be treated regardless and we would provide transportation and housing. The young man’s guardian agreed to let us try and help so we made a call to Greenville and advised them of the young man’s conditions and once again our medical team has answered the call and we will have a confirmed scheduled appointment for this young man in the morning to get the medical help he needs for his walking difficulty when the guardian calls to provide our care coordinator with his demographic information. This is one sad situation, but rest assure the Shriners and Shriners Hospitals will not let this young man down!
