The Living God Knows and actuates the future.. (Note: Capitalization for emphasis only) Certainty of Gods promises or Gods Word comes from the fact that what God says not only did happen (past) is happening(present) but will happen (future). If God does not know with any certainty the future but only possibilities that may or may not happen then there cannot be any certainty involved in Gods Word at least in relation to a Future unknown and unseen by Him, if at all! The statement that God cannot know or see the future at all can be overturned by but one example where God does see and know the future. Examples of Gods exhaustive knowledge of all things past, present and future are abundant in the Scriptures where in but one example is the following passage: Deuteronomy 9: 1-5 Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven, a people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak! Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the Lord hath said unto thee. Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the Lord thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the Lord hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord doth drive them out from before thee. Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In this passage there are some very relevant statements made about God. 1. God would go BEFORE the Israelites ( in front of) so that the Israelites would and could know that God was future from their perspective and knew that future and events.. not possibilities. 2. There is certainty about what God WOULD do in the future as to the inhabitants of the land and in relation to the Israelites. These are statements of certainty not possibilities that may or may not happen. 3. The certainty of these statements given to the Israelites about what God WOULD do in the future was not based upon any causation direct or indirect, or determinism at all.. but was based entirely on God performing exactly what He had already promised (in the past) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (would be for the future!) so that Gods Word would not return as an empty promise and God be challenged as a liar... It is interesting that the concept of righteousness also appears in this context. The Israelites were not to say that these things happened because they were more righteous than the present inhabitants of the land.. That is clearly demonstrated as a false righteousness as the Nation of Israel was just as obnoxious! What is implied, but not stated is that it all has to do with Gods fair and right dealings with an obnoxious Israel because of His own promise and it would not be right for God not to perform or act according to His own word! So its nothing to do with man being right.. but God doing what is right because of His nature and Character!
