The Lone Sponge Fisherman of the Florida Keys, A Dying Breed Without sunglasses to protect his eyes from the waters harsh glare, I watch with fascination from a shady spot under the bridge as the old man, barefoot, crosses razor sharp coral to a boat as old as he. After numerous and exhausting tugs at the starter cord eventually the engine fires up and calmly the old man motors out to sea, towing behind a platform skiff: his stage from where hell stand all day in the heat and practice his art, hopefully collecting enough sponges to sell and feed his family. Never does the old man stomp, mumble or complain, nor does he seem unhappy that he is the last of the Florida Keys sponge fishermen. But, today is a good day. Photo Courtesy of Sammie Mays
