The Lord of host says, Consider your ways! You have sown much but harvested little; you eat, but theres not enough to satisfy; you drink, but theres not enough to become drunk, you put on clothing, but no one is warm; and he who earns, earns wages to put into a purse with holes. (Haggai 1: 5,6) The prodigal son took a moment, considered what his choices had brought him and made a decision to leave it behind and go to his fathers house where even the servants were doing better. 30 seconds. Thats about all it takes to stop and consider and realize the better way. As we plan for the dangers ahead, those thatll sidetrack us, we need to avoid all known dangers, think three steps ahead of trouble, but when were caught in a precarious moment we need to take 30 seconds to consider the decision about to be made. Looking at a second hand on a watch or clock, count off 30 seconds. More time than we think, but its enough to make a difference. Take time to ask specifically planned questions, to question ourself about the outcome and benefits, what we really want and why. Maybe weve done this, but maybe we neednt follow the example of Wiley Coyote, who really had some good ideas had he not give up on them the first time they failed. So, next time were faced with temptation we state: ive got a choice to make here. Then consider the whole of the matter. 30 seconds.
