The Lord’s Prayer: Knowing our acceptance with God, we humbly prays for holy perseverance, Lead us not into temptation. The man who is really forgiven is anxious not to offend again; the possession of justification leads to an anxious desire for sanctification. “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil- that is sanctification in its negative and positive forms. It is God testing us to prove that we can pass the tests, and God protecting us from the snares of the enemy. David prayed that “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts” (Psalm 139:23). The word “Try” was used in the context of a metallurgist who would take impure metal and remove the impurities. David is asking God to test him and remove anything that is impure in order to be stronger when the testing is over.
