The Lotus and Buddhism One of the most important aspects of a religion is its use of adornments. Being colorful but elegant, grand but gracious, adornments alone can nobly purify the worshipper. Though religious adornments are not complete without flowers, East Asian Buddhism especially loves the lotus. The lotus is not tainted by muddy water, but rather purifies the dirt. In addition, from the lotus seed pods and flowers to its roots and stalks, the lotus generously sacrifices everything it has. Furthermore, its subtle fragrance and tranquil appearance exude their own style and taste. Such virtues of the lotus flower symbolize well the Buddha who humbles himself to save people despite his state of perfect enlightenment. In this way, Buddhism and the lotus are inextricably connected. -from Templestay Magazine, 2014 spring-
