The Luke-Acts Project, Week 3, day 6: Luke 3:23-38 - Under Lining or Provenance. Todays reading is of a kind of passages that is often lightly skimmed over--if not passed over completely--by casual readers of Sacred Scripture, or in a more modern rendering, lightweights. There is a principle that must be understood particularly when reading the Bible. Nothing is in the text for no reason; every word is where it is for a divine purpose. This concept is implicit under the rubric of Yahwehs superintention of all things, and specifically His Holy Word. Dr. Luke is taking the space on the parchment and the time from his life to list one-by-one the generations from Jesus back through the history of Israel to King David, back through to Abraham, to Adam, to God Himself. The main point of this genealogy and its presence here is to underscore what just happened in our reading yesterday: God the Father pronouncing Jesus as His Son. Full disclosure: there is a curious and not small set of differences between the lineage we have here and the genealogy given in Matthew 1. Our important question is not HOW this could be, but rather WHY this could be. Always remember your God wants you to use your mind, and reason together with Him. youtube/watch?v=U3bsAMyRwbw
