The Main Street Historic District in Vicksburg, includes what is thought to be the earliest residential and commercial area in the city, including Christ Episcopal Church, the oldest church, and probably oldest public building, still in existence in Vicksburg (ca 1839-1843). The District is architecturally significant for its concentration of well-preserved Greek Revival residences and 19th and 20th century commercial and public buildings. Buildings constructed at the point where Openwood Street intersects Locust and Main streets are uniquely designed to accommodate the peculiar angles of the streets, employing slanted fronts and canted corners.
