The Majesty Of Eternal Life TEXT: TITUS 1:1-9 KEY VERSE: “Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began” (Titus 1:1,2). The dreams of most men do not transcend the observable, earthly realm. Most people believe that everything on earth begins and ends here; indeed, most hold that the world is an accident of history, a random error as it were, with a definite end and no more! Unknown to them however, this present world is the genesis of eternity, which believers strive to conquer so as to enter into the real eternal bliss that the Saviour has gone to prepare for His own. Paul had a clear understanding of his calling as that of preparing men for eternal life. It was for this cause that the preaching of God’s word was committed to him. And it was this sacred fact which underscored his deliberate action in leaving Titus in Crete to “set in order things that are wanting and ordain elders in every city”. To Paul, those who would superintend the affairs of men and prepare them for eternal life must be men of proven spiritual integrity and impeccable conduct. Their skilful and undiluted teaching of God’s word have the capacity not only to transform men, but to also convince gainsayers. The central purpose of the gospel is to begat hope as well as faith, take off the mind and heart from the world and its allurements and raise them to desire heaven. Paul demonstrated this great confidence in the comfort of believers whose treasure is laid-up in heaven. This informs his unrelenting effort toward the spread of the gospel, while ensuring the continuity of the work after his demise. The life and commitment of Paul the apostle underscores his belief in the reward for faithful labourers in the vineyard of God. This should be a great inspiration for all Christians today. We should also labour with all our might, first to enter into life eternal and ultimately to expand the kingdom of God in the hope of the eternal reward awaiting us. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Labour with eternity in view.
