The Making of a Leader (Part 15) In John Maxwell’s book, “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader”, passion is listed as a leadership quality and so in this article, I will focus on passion and its importance to leadership. What is Passion? Passion has been defined as a strong and barely controllable emotion. It is also defined as any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate. According to Wikipedia, “Passion (from the Latin verb patere meaning to suffer) is a term applied to a very strong feeling about a person or thing. Passion is an intense emotion, compelling enthusiasm or desire for anything.” Oprah Winfrey has said, Passion is energy. Why is Passion Important? Leadership entails leading people in your vision (whatever it may be) and to successfully achieve this you must have passion. Until a leader has passion about his vision, he cannot excel in it and neither can he get another to be passionate about the same. According to Steve Jobs, You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If youre not passionate enough from the start, youll never stick it out. Passion ensures that a leader stays on course until his vision is fulfilled; without passion, a leader will throw in the towel at the first sign of trouble. Nelson Mandela was a man driven by passion and 27 years in prison could not make him quit. As a leader moves towards accomplishing his vision, he will meet with opposition, but passion will keep him from quitting. Passion also has the ability to make an ordinary person accomplish extraordinary things. Albert Einstein said, I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious. MaryKay Ash was the founder of MaryKay Cosmetics and she envisioned a dream company where working mothers could determine their own levels of advancement and compensation, be their own bosses, and set work schedules that would leave time for their children; and MaryKay followed her vision with a passion which was contagious. When she died some years ago, many wondered what would become of her dream but one MaryKay Beauty Consultant said, “MaryKay may be dead but her dream will not die because we are the dream.” By that she was referring to thousands of women, MaryKay Beauty Consultants, who had caught the vision and more importantly passion of the late MaryKay Ash. Passion not only motivates people to excel, passion also ensures that their vision lives on after they are gone. In John Maxwell’s book, “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader”, he wrote, “What makes it possible for people who might seem ordinary to achieve great things? More than 50% of all CEOs of Fortune 500 companies had C or C- averages in college. Nearly 75% of all U.S. Presidents were in the bottom half of their school classes. More than 50% of all millionaires’ entrepreneurs never finished college. They All Had Passion, It Makes A Difference!” #eturuvieerebor #takingtheleadseminars
