The Malawi government is confident of eradicating poverty through a new project in the mining sector. The Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA) project aims at increasing the government’s revenue and improve Malawi’s mining legislation to maximize the country’s benefits. Speaking during a one-day regional stakeholders’ meeting of the mining sector in Malawi held in Lilongwe, Mining Minister John Bande said SESA will cover the whole country and address environmental, social and local economic issues associated with different types of mining and mineral processing operations. Mining accounts about 10 per cent to Malawi’s exports, and less than 1 percent to its total revenues. Bande said as a result, his ministry had developed the mines and minerals policy for it to improve transparency on revenues. In her State of the Nation Address in February 2013, President Joyce Banda stated that her government was committed to promoting a transparent and accountable mining sector in the country with its citizens as primary beneficiaries of the resources.
