The Malda police superintendent today ordered a probe into the charge that Habibpur police had not accepted a complaint from the families of two minor adivasi girls who had been allegedly molested in a mango orchard. The complaint was that Susanta Mondol, 22, had tried to rape the Class V students when they had gone to collect mangoes in their village on Wednesday afternoon. “Susanta grabbed one of the girls and tried to molest her. When the other girl rushed to her rescue, the youth grabbed her also. He tore off their dresses. But the girls managed to flee,” said the father of one of the girls. The family members of the girls, including the parents, today travelled 60km to reach here and narrated the whole incident to SP Kalyan Mukherjee. According to an uncle of one of the girls, who teaches in a high school in Siliguri, the village was populated mostly by adivasis. “I was told about the incident and I rushed back to my village. We went to the Habibpur police station, 7km from our village, to lodge a complaint yesterday. We were made to wait there from 9am to 3pm, but the police never gave us any receipt acknowledging the filing of the complaint. The police kept on saying they could not accept the complaint as the officer-in-charge was not present,” said the school teacher. Mukherjee said an officer of the rank of deputy police superintendent was being given the responsibility to inquire into the police’s role. “The youth against whom the complaint has been lodged has been arrested on Thursday night and a case of attempted rape started against him,” said the SP. Mukherjee said he had learnt from sources yesterday that the Habibpur police had not accepted the complaint. “I called up the Habibpur police and instructed them to arrest the youth immediately. However, I didn’t know that the families would come and meet me today,” said Mukherjee.
