The Mayor of Toronto is the most popularly elected official in - TopicsExpress

The Mayor of Toronto is the most popularly elected official in Canada - no prime minister or elected official gets has as many electors votes as our mayor. Yet legistatively, our Mayor is one of 45 - with not caucus or political party power to move forward her or his agenda. In essence, we are electing a manager. At the beginning of this campaign, I decided to support John Tory. Even though Olivia Chow and I are probably closer on many issues, it was not a hard choice. City council where the real elected power is and it is a shared power. Our non-partisan council is an ideological soup that can only steer a middle course - and mayors that try to turn it left or right only cause it to stall. Scott Scott Biltoft attended was the LGBTQ debate at Ryerson last month and what was fascinating was there was virtually no debate. John and Olivias only competition (Ford 2.0 was a no show) was to see who could better ingraciate themselves to the communty more and both did well. Toronto need to elect a Mayor not so much to lead as to manage change. We have some really interesting people running for council - like Liz West out in Danforth whose trying to unseat a piece of wood named Paula Fletcher who has done nothing discernable in 12 years or Mike Layton in Trinity Spadina who has this indefatigable energy that reminds me of his father, who we worked together with to build the Buddies Theatre or even our race here where the Megan McIver is trying to unseat Kirsten
