The Mayors response to email regarding moving the RMV TO DOWNTOWN LAWRENCE.....................................Thanks for emailing me about the RMV moving downtown. I understand your concerns and we will do our best to make the transition of moving the RMV, and the experience of getting in and out the RMV in the future as painless as possible. No site has been selected but, the RFP calls for ample parking and access to the site. We will be sure to pick a location that does just that. What I want you to understand is that we are trading some convenience for some economic development. For decades we have waited for our downtown to come back to life and for private investment to happen. It has not. As a City we cannot continue the legacy of neglect in the heart of our City. All of our property values suffer if we do not make our downtown a vibrant and active place. We added a downtown bus shuttle and now we will bring a major State office downtown to begin the process of bringing our downtown back. A few things to remember: • The RFP Area (.5 ml radius from City Hall) has plenty of places to put the RMV with plenty of parking to accommodate it. • We will be sure to pick a site that best meets the needs of the RMV and its customers but also has the best positive impact to our City • Any City or Town in America that people want to visit and spend money in parking is a factor and it isn’t always easy or convenient. • Lastly, If we the residents of the City don’t believe that we can make the RMV work downtown why would anyone who has money to open a restaurant, or a store, or a service business believe they could build or grow their business here. You voted for me to address the problems facing the City. We did not raise taxes this year. We added 10 net new police officers and we continue to improve public safety, we are working hard to clean up our City streets, and every day we are trying to increase the Cities reputation, and lastly the Superintendent/Receiver of our school system is hard at work making our schools better. We must also attack the City’s unemployment (11% one of the highest in the State) so we are trying what we can to better the local economy. Moving the RMV downtown is one of those efforts. We are hard at work doing what we were elected to do. I appreciate your support in the past, but if this effort has changed your mind about having supported me that is OK. I will continue to work hard to make our City better and hope that in the future you I can earn your support again. Thanks, Dan Daniel Rivera Mayor & CEO City of Lawrence 200 Common St. Lawrence, MA 01840 cityoflawrence
