The McCann family support the Day of Action at 2pm June 14th OConnell Street, Dublin. Joe McCann was branded a dangerous terrorist by the state, what he actually was was a Republican Socialist who followed in the footsteps of his own hero James Connolly. Joe was loved by the people that he worked with on a daily basis, the workers who lived in poor housing conditions and worked for even poorer wages. He energized them and organised them, showing them that by pulling together they could achieve the social justice that they were denied for so long. He set up Co-Ops, housing committees and encouraged people to get involved to better themselves and their community. Extremely generous of spirit he would often give over his last penny rather than see someone else stuck. He was a bricklayer by trade, like his father before him. He was self educated and possessed an intelligence that belied his mere 24 years of age. He loved art and loved music and singing, indeed he was no shrinking violet when the opportunity to sing presented itself as his old friends will testify! Our father, Joseph McCann, fondly known as Big Joe, was shot in the back by members of the 1st Battalion The Parachute Regiment as he tried to evade arrest. The recent draft report by the now defunct Historical Enquiries Team (HET) found that he did not pose the specific level of threat to justify being gunned down. There was ample opportunity to arrest my father but instead they decided shoot. We believe that Joe was deliberately targeted for assassination as the Army made it clear to everyone they could that he would not see the inside of Long Kesh. His own brother was shown a mock grave with Joes name on it during interrogation at Palace Barracks and told thats were Joes going. They never intended to take him alive and they lived up to that promise. The intransigence of British state is legendary and they continue to this day to stone-wall any attempts for people to find the truth, why?!, because what they have to hide is truly disturbing. State sanctioned murder and torture. Proven beyond doubt most recently by the team in the Pat Finucane Centre. The PSNI is another arm of this state collusion and openly continues to pursue a policy of non co-operation when asked for information on historical cases. Yet we are supposed to trust them to carry out an independent investigation into the death of our loved ones? We think not! They are not fit for purpose. We call for the families of all the victims to be given their right to a full and proper investigation into the death of their loved ones. Only then can we begin to heal the scars of the past and maybe, just maybe, move forward toward a better future for all the people of this island. SET THE TRUTH FREE.
