The Meaning of Firstborn One asked me, evidently in reference - TopicsExpress

The Meaning of Firstborn One asked me, evidently in reference to Colossians 1:15, if I knew what the Greek word for firstborn means. The Greek word for firstborn in Colossians 1:15 means the same thing that firstborn means throughout the Bible. It refers to either the first one to be brought forth of the gorup being spoken of, or else the one who is given the rights of the actual first one to be brought forth. The partitive genitive usage ALWAYS includes the firstborn in the group that that is being spoken of. Many claim that the word means preeminence or preeminent one; while the one who is firstborn, or who has been given the rights of the firstborn, is also given preeminence, neither the Hebrew nor the Greek word for firstborn actually means preeminence. biblestudytools/lexicons/hebrew/nas/bekowr.html biblestudytools/lexicons/greek/nas/prototokos.html The word firstborn never means that the one who is firstborn was uncreated, never brought forth into being, or that the firstborn is NOT a member of the group of which he is the firstborn. The group in Colossians 1:15 is every creature. The ONLY reason to make an exception to this in Colossians 1:15 would be a desire to make it conform to the added-on dogma that Jesus has always existed. Nevertheless, even if one were to insert pre-eminent one into Colossians 1:15, the partitive genitive usage would still make the pre-eminent one a member of every creature of which he has pre-eminence.
