The Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) Department of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB, ulab.edu.bd ) will present its Spring Semester 2013 Media Exhibits from April 23 to 28, 2013. The exhibit brings together the works of students from various courses– theoretical paper presentations, Advertising campaign presentation, visual art, digital art, video art, photography, digital productions, television productions and online exhibit. Every semester, the MSJ Department launches an exhibit – the forthcoming one being its twelfth. Each exhibit is based on a philosophical/ sociological concept and/or theory, which is used to guide and harmonize student outputs as well as ground them in communication-related perspectives. The theme for Spring Semester 2013 is “Documenting me…. the Bangladeshi.” The theme highlights the document theory pioneered by Otlet but modified and re-introduced by Winfeld Lund. Lund (2010) defines documents as “any results of human efforts to tell, instruct, teach or produce . . .by using some means in some ways.” According to Lund, the process of documentation can be seen as constituted by four elements, producers, instruments, modes and documents. You have always at least one human being as the producer of a document. You never have a document without a human being involved. Besides a human person you need some kind of instrument to make the document. You can use your body as an instrument by using your organ of speech or your fingers etc., but you cannot make a document without using a minimum of means, of instruments. Next, the persons producing the document are always using the means, the instruments, in certain ways. These ways are very often turned into certain traditions for making specific kinds of documents. Finally, when you have some human beings using some instruments in some specific ways, you can have a result of this activity, a document. Some thought to ponder looking the at four elements of the documentation process: • Producers – Who is producing? What is his/her background – age, class, education, gender? What is his/her interest? What are his/her intentions? • Instrument – What is the instrument being used to document? Diaries? Camera? Painting/Sketch? Music/Songs? Poems/Stories? Plays? Film? Reports/Studies? Social Media? Blogs? • Modes – How are the instruments being used? Treatment? Traditions? Philosophies? Rules of Thumb? Ways of seeing realities? Ways of remediating realities? • Documents – What are the documents produced? How are the documents preserved or stored? Who has access to these documents? Who can retrieve these documents? Which documents are made available for public consumption? Why? As applied to the MSJ Curriculum Integration Program for spring 2013, each faculty will carry and integrate the theme in their courses. Students, in each course, will document themselves as Bangladeshi as a partial requirement of the course.
