The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The most desirable names by Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahmaan.” [Abu Dawud] What does Abdullah mean? It means “the slave of Allah.” Once Ibraheem bin Adhem bought a slave in order to set him free. He asked him, “What is your name?” “Whatever you call me with is my name, Sir.” “What do you want to eat?” “Whatever you’ll give I’ll eat, Sir.” “What can you do?” “Whatever you order me to do, I can, Sir.” “What is your wish?” “How can a slave have a wish? His wish is the command of his owner.” After these answers Ibraheem bin Adhem wept so much that he was about to faint. When he came to, he said to himself, “You miserable man! Learn how to be a slave from this slave. Have you ever been a slave for Allah like him?” The slaves of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala), the inheritors of Paradise, do not live for themselves. Whatever Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) wants them to be, is their only wish.
