The Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, has warned that a “few more” Nigerians will develop the Ebola Virus Disease before the deadly infection is curtailed in Nigeria. The minister said those at risk are those Nigerians who had contact with the victim in Rivers State. Mr. Chukwu highlighted the need for great vigilance, particularly at ports of entry, to prevent further importation of the virus into Nigeria. Addressing the National Council on Health Meeting on Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak in Nigeria, he noted that the situation would be effectively managed in Rivers State just as it was done in Lagos and Enugu States. According to him, the Incident Management Committee has deployed a strong team to Rivers State to work with the state government to contain the spread of the virus. He also announced the decision of the National Council on Health (NCH)to suspend the importation of bush meat to the country. According to the him, the decision to stop the importation of bush meat was taken at the emergency meeting of the council over the Ebola Virus Disease (EBD) outbreak. The bush meat, which include antelope, grass cutter and rabbit are however hunted locally and not imported. In a related development,one of the three patients quarantined at the Rivers State temporary isolation centre, Oduoha in Emohua Local Government Area has tested positive to the virus.The woman in her 60s was a patient at the good heart hospital where the late doctor Enemoah was admitted.The two other people tested negative but officials say more test will be conducted on them.
