The Mirror A Poem by Father R. Joseph Owles You are a mirror -- In you I see my own reflection; In you I see what I have let myself become. I fear you Because I know you will reveal the truth to me. I hate you Because it seems easier than accepting myself. I fear you Because I fear that you will reveal What I fear about myself. I hate you Because I hate that you will reveal What I hate about myself. Making you “other” is convenient -- If I allow myself see you as human, If I allow myself to see you as a Child of God, Then I risk seeing the me that is in you. I do not fear you! I fear the me I see in you! I do not hate you! I hate the me you reflect! So, if I can let myself be loved, If I can love myself, What then will I see in you? You are a mirror -- In you I see my own reflection; In you I see what I have let myself become. I love you Because you reveal truth to me. I love you Because it is easier accepting myself. I love you Because you reveal what I love about myself. I love you Because you remind me I am worthy to be loved. Making you “other” is inconvenient -- If I allow myself see you as human, If I allow myself to see you as a Child of God, Then I allow myself to see the me that is in you. I know how I feel about myself By looking at how I feel about you. I know what I think I deserve for myself By looking at what I think you deserve. I know who I really think I am By looking at how I treat you. If I hate myself, I will hate you; If I love myself, I will love you; I treat you according to how I feel about myself; For you are a mirror -- In you I see my own reflection; In you I see what I have let myself become. © 2013 Father R.
