The Mississippi College football team took a lead into the fourth quarter, but Shorter University scored 14 unanswered points in the final stanza to grab a 27-14 win on Thursday night at Historic Barron Stadium. The Choctaws (0-4, 0-2 GSC) took an early lead, their first of the season, when freshman Kyle Smith pushed in from one yard out, giving MC a 7-0 advantage with 5:39 left in the first quarter. Smith had a 42-yard run on the first offensive play of the game for the Choctaws after they forced a missed field goal on the opening drive for the Hawks (3-1, 1-0 GSC). Shorter would kick two field goals the rest of the first half, but MC was able to take a 7-6 lead into the intermission. MC took the opening kickoff to open the second half, but a fumble gave Shorter the ball in Choctaw territory. B.J. McCoy capped off a six-play drive with a five-yard run to give the Hawks their first lead of the game at 13-7. The Choctaws would answer right back as on the first play of the next drive, Smith found senior Jaime Harris for a 62-yard touchdown pass that gave MC the lead 14-13. Smith threw for 95 yards and rushed for 75, while Harris caught three passes for 84 yards. The Choctaws would maintain the lead through the third quarter and went into the fourth with the advantage. The Hawks used a couple of big plays in the fourth quarter to score 14 points and come back for the win. Quarterback Eric Dodson rushed in from 35 yards out on a 4th-and-5 to give Shorter the lead and Aaron Bryant capped off the win with a 67-yard run with 10 minutes to go. Defensively, senior Jake Weddle led the Choctaws with 18 tackles, including 14 solo stops. He fell one tackle shy of his career-high after posting 19 last season against Webber International. Junior C.J. OQuinn led the team with two tackles for loss on the night. Jevaris Jones led the Hawks with eight tackles and two for loss. The Choctaws will be back home next Saturday when they host University of the Faith at 2:00 p.m. at Robinson-Hale Stadium.
