The Mississippi Legislative Symposium on Dyslexia will be held on Monday, September 15, 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Mississippi College in Anderson Hall. State Representative Larry Byrd will host the event which will provide information for legislators on the dramatic effects of dyslexia on our state and practical solutions for addressing the needs of children with dyslexia. The event is sponsored by the Mississippi Dyslexia Therapy Association, Mississippi Families for Children with Dyslexia, and Mississippi College. Parents, therapists, and teachers are asked to contact their state legislators and request their presence at the symposium. Those who contact their legislators may attend the symposium at no charge to greet their legislators personally and thank them for their support of dyslexia education. Presentations will be delivered by the following nationally recognized speakers: • Hal Malchow, President of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and a Mississippi native. Mr. Malchow is the parent of a son with dyslexia and has authored children’s stories and books that were inspired by his son. Mr. Malchow will speak on his personal experiences with dyslexia. He will also speak on the IDA’s purpose and vision to provide the most comprehensive range of information and services that addresses the full scope of dyslexia and related difficulties in learning to read and write, so that every individual has the opportunity to lead a productive and fulfilling life. • Suzanne Carreker, Ph.D., CALT, QI, Senior Vice President of Neuhaus Education Center in Bellaire, Texas, and member of International Dyslexia Association Professional Standards and Practices Committee. Dr. Carreker was instrumental in the creation of accreditation standards that serve as a guide in accrediting programs that prepare teachers of reading to work with students who have reading difficulties and disabilities. Dr. Carreker will provide information on dyslexia, as well as the need for universities to prepare teachers at the undergraduate and graduate level to address dyslexia effectively in Mississippi. • A special message will be heard from Congressman Bill Cassidy, M.D., Louisiana, Co-Chair of the U.S. House Dyslexia Caucus. Dr. Cassidy is the parent of a child with dyslexia and advocate for children with dyslexia. He submitted a resolution calling for the U.S. House to acknowledge the impact of dyslexia and urge schools and educational agencies to address its impact on students.
