The #MondayNightWar Documentary that surrounded Bret Hart and the Montreal Screwjob. I can understand what Vince McMahon had to do. There was no right or wrong in this incident, just a bigger picture decision that lies inbetween. The Hart of War. The primetime battle between WCW and WWE was intensely fought in the 1990s. It was quite the effort to put either side out of business. When WCW started to build their foundation around the talent of the 80s, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ric Flair, Gene Okerlund, Miss Elizabeth, Public Enemy, Terry Funk, and the defection of part of their youth movement in Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, Bret Hart was literally the last big star in 1997 that had yet to turn to WCW. Vince McMahon knew that his Attitude Era campaign was the only thing running for the company to rival WCW. He treated Bret with respect as a main event talent, but Bret would not join the new campaign being a more traditionally valued athlete seeking clean honor. They both worked out some way for Bret to stay with WWE and to keep relevant with their audience. Because Bret didnt like or embrace the Attitude Era camping and his disdain for Shawn Michaels, Vince literally confessed that going against the grain had no future for him. He even told him to go for WCW to find better success if Bret didnt have commitment to the new company direction. At the time, Bret saw the WWE as his home he grew up in professionally. He didnt want to leave. That fueled the desertion when Brets contract was up. He was the current WWE Champion, and Vince felt the Title needed to come off of Bret. In Vinces mind, it wouldve been a PR nightmare if your top talent champion appeared on the rival brand with their championship. So Vince did what he felt was needed to protect the industry: Strip him of the Title in a false finish where the statement was decisive. This became infamously known as the Montreal Screwjob. WWE did what they could to keep the WWE Championship from falling into the hands of WCW and ruining their business. Paul Heyman appeared on this weeks episode, and added the caviot comment to explain the logic as a business owner, sharing his experience as ECWs creator and manager. Heyman was brutally honest in describing the whole situation from a business standpoint.: From the perspective of an owner of a company [ECW], absolutely I agree with Vince McMahon. Were gonna change the Title tonight. No were not! No were not!? F*** you!! YES WE ARE!! My show, my money, my investment, my a**!!! Your dropping the Title! No I dont wanna drop the Title... Ok, no problem. Your gonna drop the Title anyway.
