The Montgomery City Council will meet tomorrow at 4:45. They will be convening to make changes to the city ordinances concerning pet ownership. The changes that they are considering making will impose a fine/license on citizens who own five or more cats or dogs. We invite and encourage you to come to this hearing at City Hall, 103 North Perry Street and let the City Council know how you feel about this proposed ordinance. Below is the verbiage specific to this new rule: SECTION 2. ADOPTION OF THE FOLLOWING. WHEREAS, limiting the number of dogs per residence is substantially related to controlling the problems of dog noise and odor, and controlling such problems benefits the general welfare and health of the citizens of Montgomery, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA, that the following is adopted: 1. Keeping large numbers of animals; special permit. It shall be unlawful for any person to harbor, own, keep custody or take care of five or more dogs or cats over six months of age or older, or one litter of pups or one litter of kittens, or engage in the business of breeding, buying, selling, trading, training or boarding, without having obtained a special permit from the City of Montgomery. There shall be only one special permit issued per residence. The special permit shall be issued by the Chief of Police for the City of Montgomery, or his designee. The fee for such special permit, or any renewal thereof, shall be $20.00.
