The Morning After... New Years Day and in Defense of the Crystal Ball: Does anyone but me remember New Years Day before the friggin BCS ruined it? Youd wake up in the morning to the Rose Parade and then switch over to college football. Thered be the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and Orange Bowl played basically back to back to back, pitting one set of ranked teams against each other all day long. It was wonderful, it was glorious! Yesterday was kinda like that, except it wasnt a holiday (ld argue it should have been) and there wasnt a parade in the morning, though l expect there to be one in Tempe this morning (way to go Devils!). Of course there were other differences too. Most of yesterdays action was in conference match ups where bowl games used to pit conferences against each other. Do you know the biggest similarity between the old all major bowl games are on New Years Day and yesterday though? The number of unforced errors made in the games. It was an exciting day of football yesterday but it was not great football. When it used to happen on New Years Day it made some sense. That game was the first time these teams had played in about a month. There was bound to be some rust. No team that played yesterday could use that excuse. The crystal ball will gladly use it though. Matter of fact, though it went a respectable 2-2-1 yesterday (that Domers over Devils pick lm calling a tie since we did state Golson needed to take care of the ball for them to win and he failed there--matter of fact, since we stated that lm saying we went 3-2 now). The crystal ball may run on black magic but even that cant predict field goal snap holders muffing perfectly good snaps or receivers dropping TD passes at the 1 yard line in celebration and then allowing the other team to run it all the way back for a TD for the opponent. There were more plays like that yesterday than just plain good football plays which saddens me greatly. Not because I care about the crystal ball (l tossed it the dumpster this morning) but because now l can only say yesterday was an exciting day and not a great one.
