The Most Debilitating Disease As a teenager, my father often - TopicsExpress

The Most Debilitating Disease As a teenager, my father often referred to me as, "the most cynical person I know". The less we think of ourselves, the less we think of others. As a reformed cynic, I am troubled by the zeitgeist of my generation, to say nothing of the baby boomers. While I understand that we are living through a tumultuous period, there is much to be encouraged about. When we allow economists, physicians, journalists, and scientists to convince us that the sky is falling we dig our own grave. What we need is hope, faith, grace, trust, and a conviction that we are wisely allocating our time. When our own internal state is in shambles, we seek out news, people, and situations that will reinforce our own depression. Imagine how much we could save our posterity by engaging our neighbors, coworkers, grandparents, and classmates rather than leaving them to drown out their misery with booze, shopping, pills, or surfing(boardless)! The next time you encounter a cynical comment or thought, please offer the opposing view, even if you risk social disapprobation. Rational Optimism: the antidote for those annoying hipsters who dress better, have a better taste in music, and a sweeter bicycle than you.
