The Mount Savage Volunteer Fire Company 1, Inc. began its service Sept. 8, 1896. The first fire apparatuses were hand-drawn hose reels, which were located all over town in hose houses that were connected to hydrants. The first firehouse stood in the area of the current tennis/basketball courts and was destroyed by fire on Feb. 17, 1924. In 1927, a new 20-foot by 30-foot fire station was built on to the rear of the Acme Bill Farrell building and a 1924 American LaFrance 500 GPM Pumper was purchased. The civil defense siren was placed in service in 1945 and replaced the steam whistle from the C&P; shops that also was used for the fire alarms. In 1941, the fire company purchased its first ambulance, a 1937 Studebaker, from a local funeral director, creating the first volunteer ambulance service in Western Maryland. A number of vehicle purchases followed, and in 2006 the company purchased a 2005 379 Ambulance. The 1994 379 Ambulance was turned into a paramedic unit, with two fire company members becoming paramedics. Today there are five paramedics serving the community. In 1996, the 1972 Chevrolet rescue truck was replaced with a 1996 International rescue and equipment truck, and is still in service. This year a new brush truck was placed into service, retiring the old Department of Natural Resources truck.
