The Muppets made their debut on The Ed Sullivan Show on this day - TopicsExpress

The Muppets made their debut on The Ed Sullivan Show on this day in 1966. The Muppets were the creation of the late Jim Henson, with the term coming from combining the words marionette and puppet. As The Sullivan Show was becoming more defined by the new era of rock n roll music that was beginning to shape the 1960s, other aspects of the counterculture found their way into the program. The Muppets represented a hipper form of entertainment for the now older and more mature Sullivan Show youngsters. Their first sketch consisted of a monster muppet playing a gritty rock n roll song. Their second featured the now famous Kermit the Frog as a jive talking beatnik. The Muppets would appear over 20 more times on the show until its end in 1971 and are perhaps one of Sullivans most enduring acts, becoming a whole franchise of its own. youtu.be/mtdHSLAGR80
