The Murder of Richard Hardy: It is said that true love is free, - TopicsExpress

The Murder of Richard Hardy: It is said that true love is free, but how dearly we pay for the counterfeit, this was no more real than in the relationship between 18 year-old Emily Newman and 19 year-old Richard Hardy. Richard was born into a family of wealth and privilege; he was by all accounts, handsome, kind and generous. Emily on the other hand was the complete opposite, she was born into poverty and had grown to be a selfish, uncaring, and manipulated just about everyone she met. Although she and her family had been welcomed into the Hardy household it seemed no matter what she was given, it wasn’t enough. The generosity of Richards parents seemed to have no bounds, when they heard of the strife Emily’s family was going through they gave them a house on their grounds, free of rent and gave both Mr. And Mrs. Newman employment. Even with Emily’s constant wanting, Richard was in love and a date for their wedding was set the 12th October 1799. On 12th September only one month before the nuptials Richard’s body was found, covered in blood in a wood near his home. He had been savagely beaten and his throat had been cut. An initial enquiry led nowhere; there were no leads, no witnesses and no motive. Ironically it wasn’t until 12th October, the day of the wedding that the case broke. Emily was with her parents eating dinner when she said, without warning: “I am lonely, I wish I hadn’t done for Richard, I did love him.” Her horrified parents called the local constable and Emily was arrested. At her trial she openly admitted to killing Richard and told the court she did so because he said no to a necklace she wanted. Emily Newman was hanged on this day 29th November 1799, in front of a large crowd.
